Responsive nav

Chegg navigation

This project involved the redesign of the Chegg navigation system from a single global nav to a constellation experience in which each product would have it's own dedicated nav.

One of the primary goals was to help drive more traffic and awareness of the individual Chegg products. Along with helping drive more SEO traffic, the dedicated navs gave each product the abililty to configure the links and other nav elements based on their needs. We also wanted to move from separate desktop and mobile nav experiences to a single responsive nav.

My role on this project was UX lead and I worked with another UX Designer and User Researcher.

Discovery phase

Once we had a good understanding of the goals and requirements. We moved into a discovery phase which included evaluating the pain points with the current nav system, competitive/comparative analysis as well as collaborative ideation sessions.

Design, test, iterate

During the discovery phase we explored a number of different directions and validated those in the lab with users. We also tried to take a mobile first approach because of the complexity of navigating between the global nav and product navs was more challenging on mobile.

Responsive design

Unlike the previous navigation, we designed this one responsively to create a more unified cross device experience.

Refine and finalize

Through multiple rounds of user research we narrowed in on a hamburger menu design for both mobile and desktop. We decided to keep the hamburger menu on the desktop experience because it allowed users to easily navigate between other Chegg products without having to go back to the homepage or via a separate global header.
