Chegg mobile app

One of the main goals for this project was to redesign the existing iPhone app that only allowed users to purchase textbooks or read eTextbooks and expand it to include other Chegg services such as Textbook Solutions and Expert Q&A. We also wanted to expand the app onto iPad and Android. The ultimate goal of this was to drive more mobile downloads and usage of other Chegg services

This involved a complete rethinking of the existing app. We also had to spend a lot of time thinking about how to incorporate the core features from the desktop experience in a way that's optimized and appropriate for mobile.

Identifying the user tasks

One of the first steps of the project once we had an understanding of the business goals was to identify the user tasks. This would help us determine how to best structure the app and begin mapping out the user flows.

Sketching the user flows

Once we identified the core user tasks we began sketching the user flows. Since we knew we were going to be expanding the app onto the iPad we tried to sketch both the mobile and tablet flows at the same time. This process involved a series of whiteboard sessions including representatives from product and engineering.

Mapping out the experience

Once we had a good understanding of the main user flows we then divided up the work and began fleshing out the individual screens. For more complex flows like Q&A I created a detailed UX map to help identify any gaps in the experience and for communicating with the product and development teams.

Establishing the design language

As we started working on the individual screens I took the lead in establishing the design language and styleguide for the app. I then worked with the other designers to make sure it was applied consistently and to add new components.

Unified experience across iPhone, iPad & Android

When creating the final designs I worked with the team to ensure that we were creating an optimized experience for each device while maintaining a coherent product experience.

As we fleshed out the designs I also created mobile prototypes to test interactions and flows. We also used some of these prototypes for user research sessions.
